At East Bay Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we offer safe, effective mole removal procedures tailored to your needs and cosmetic goals.
Three primary methods of mole removal
- Shaving: Ideal for moles that are raised or irritated by clothing. After numbing the area with local anesthetic, the mole is shaved flush with the surrounding skin. While quick and effective, there is a possibility the mole could grow back and may appear darker than before.
- Elliptical excision: Recommended when there is a higher suspicion of melanoma, or if the patient is concerned about regrowth or uneven skin contours. This technique removes the mole and a small margin of underlying tissue using an elliptical incision, which is then closed with sutures for optimal healing. This method has a slightly higher chance of scarring but significantly reduces the risk of regrowth or incomplete excision.
- Laser removal: A minimally invasive option that uses targeted light energy to break up pigment within the mole. The body naturally absorbs and eliminates the treated tissue during the healing process. Laser removal has the advantage of minimal bleeding and scarring, though raised moles may require multiple sessions for complete removal.
